UoP Bus
Privacy Policy
Effective 28 October 2026
In short: UoP Bus has no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and we collect no personal data. Your location is used on your iPhone to find your closest stop and never leaves it. Your favourites and reminders stay on your iPhone too.
This policy explains what the UoP Bus app for iPhone, with its App Clip, widgets and Live Activities ("UoP Bus", "the app"), and the website uopbus.mksvrcek.com handle, where it is kept and the choices you have. UoP Bus is made by Michael Kimberly Svrcek ("we", "us"). It is an independent app, not affiliated with the University of Portsmouth or the bus operator.
What stays on your iPhone
Your favourite stops, your reminders, the stop you pick for a Custom stop widget and the timetables the app downloads are kept on your iPhone only. They aren't sent to us or anyone else, and UoP Bus has no server of its own that could receive them. Like other apps' settings, they're included in your iPhone's own backups if you make them.
Permissions, used on your iPhone
- Location. If you allow it, UoP Bus compares where you are with where the stops are, to show your closest stop, how far it is to walk and when to leave, and to sort the stops nearest first. The Closest Stop widget does the same if you allow location for widgets. Your location is used on your iPhone only; it is never sent anywhere and never stored.
- Notifications. Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone, as notifications it delivers itself.
- Live Activities. The countdown on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island runs on your iPhone and is updated by the app while it's open. UoP Bus doesn't use Apple's push notification service, so it has no token for your device.
Services the app contacts
- Live bus locations. While the app is open, it asks the UK Department for Transport's Bus Open Data Service where the U1 and U2 buses are, every 10 seconds. The request names the lines, and nothing about you or where you are.
- Timetables, stops and routes. The app checks for updated timetables and downloads them from mksvrcek.github.io, hosted by GitHub. The widgets use the copies already on your iPhone.
- Maps. The map is Apple Maps, which Apple provides under Apple's Privacy Policy.
These requests carry only what is needed, plus what any internet request carries (such as your IP address), which those services may log to run and protect them. They aren't linked to you. Links in the app, such as the University's buses page, open in your browser.
The App Clip
The App Clip does the same as the app, with less: it shows the buses and the timetables, contacts the same services, and keeps nothing about you. iOS removes it and anything it kept if you don't use it for a while. Its banner for the full app is the App Store's, shown by Apple.
Diagnostics
UoP Bus has no analytics or crash-reporting code of its own. If you share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may share crash reports and usage statistics with us without identifying you.
This website
uopbus.mksvrcek.com is a static site hosted by Cloudflare, which processes standard request data (such as IP addresses) to deliver and protect it. We count visits with Umami, which is cookieless and anonymous: it records the pages visited, where a visitor came from and their kind of browser, device and country, but sets no cookies, keeps no IP addresses and can't follow a visitor from one day to the next. It counts nothing when your browser asks sites not to track it. The download page uses fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser requests them from Google. The site sets no cookies. When you choose a language, or close the note offering yours, your browser keeps that choice for this site in its own storage; it is never sent anywhere.
Keeping and deleting your data
- Unstar a stop to remove it from your favourites, and tap a departure's bell to cancel its reminder, which ends its Live Activity too.
- Deleting the app removes everything it kept on your iPhone.
- We hold no data about you, so there is nothing for us to delete; write to us with any question.
Children
UoP Bus isn't directed at children under 13, and it collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the UK GDPR), you have rights to access, correct, export and delete your personal data. UoP Bus keeps what it uses on your iPhone, where you control it, and we hold none of it; for anything else, contact us and we'll help.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here with a new effective date, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
